Mr. Oakes is responsible for carrying out the Mason County Community Foundation’s mission to build community endowment, affect positive change through grantmaking and provide leadership on key community issues. He also oversees the administrative operations of the Foundation. Through his position, Mr. Oakes furthers the Foundation’s role of facilitating philanthropy to enhance the quality of life for the people of Mason County, now and for generations to come.
Mr. Oakes assumed the position of Executive Director for the Foundation in July of 2005 following his retirement from the Ludington Area Schools. Mr. Oakes’ 36 year career as an Educator included serving as Superintendent in Ludington, Gladwin and at Mason County Eastern. Mr. Oakes has been extensively involved with community improvement projects and service clubs throughout his career. He served as President of the Board of the Mason County United Way, Chairmen of the Board of the Ludington Area Chamber of Commerce, and President of the local Rotary Club among numerous other positions with community groups striving to improve the quality of life within the Mason County area.
Mr. Oakes earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Michigan State University and a Master degree in Educational Leadership from Western Michigan University.
Mr. Oakes resides in Mason County with his wife Jeanne, also a retired educator. Together they enjoy traveling and the great outdoors of Mason County.
